Happy Winter Solstice and Grand Conjunction!
This time of year has been special to people all over the world for a different reason than traditional Western holidays. For those that follow the cycles of the moon, sun and stars, the Winter Solstice culminates with the longest night and the first day of winter in the Northern Hemisphere. In Australia and areas near the South pole, this is the 1st day of summer!
Today is also a rare astronomical conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn. It only occurs every 20 years. This day is the closest they have been together since 1623 but the most observable since 1226! There was also an eclipse on December 14th. On my evening walks, I’ve been looking up at the night sky and watching them get closer together. You can see it with the naked eye!
I look towards the sunset and southwest and can see them.

What does this all mean?
Besides being a cool and rare phenomenon, people who follow astrology may find meaning. I’m more keen on the older Vedic or sidereal astrological system called Jyotish, as it takes an account of where the planets are in relation to the stars are now. The Western or tropical system calculates based on the stars and constellations around 700BC and did not take into account the rotational tilt of the Earth. Jupiter and Saturn are the biggest planets in our solar system and give off different energies. They will appear very close together in the same sign when we look up, but actually, be 400 million miles apart.
Jupiter and Saturn
According to Vedic astrology, Jupiter and Saturn will be in Capricorn, where Saturn is the ruler. So in a tussle between the planets, Saturn is the dominant influence. Depending on where Saturn is in your birth chart will determine the influence. In Western astrology, both are said to be coming into Aquarius. I can guarantee you will be hearing that late 60’s song Age of Aquarius today! For someone who has the sun in Aquarius in both systems, even I get pulled to hoping for a change for the better. I’m still a novice but can read the planets and signs in a basic chart. If you want to know more about you, contact me via Instagram @veggiebytes
Winter Solstice Space Balls
What’s a chef to do during this time? I spent the day contemplating and made something to eat!
To simulate the dark sky and longest night, I used activated charcoal in a raw bliss ball base. This ingredient can adsorb toxins in your digestive tract. It can also help to whiten your teeth.
Release negativity by eating these Winter Solstice Bliss Balls, accept the changes that are coming, and believe in the inner goodness and light of others. That’s what inspired the mac nut inside!
I created Jupiter and Saturn too by painting a couple of the balls with TruColor Plant-Based Mica. They turned out so colorful! I made sure to add Jupiter’s red spot and made Saturn’s rings from cardstock.
